Supporting Students and Families

Supports for Families and Students during the Chauvin Trial
Posted on 04/20/2021

In light of several recent events that have resulted in violence against people of color, the Unit 4 Leadership Team and Bottenfield Elementary want you to know that we firmly stand with those directly impacted by racism, prejudice, and hate. Our team anticipates a need to support during and after the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd. Although several incidents have happened since the death of George Floyd, the trial itself combined with repeated images of violence displayed on television and social media have the potential to increase the level of pain, anxiety, and stress on those impacted, especially communities of color.

Please see the attached links for ways to support students during these times:

Attached are also links to Unit #4's SEL Workshop Series entitled, Healing Conversations. The upcoming workshop on 4/27/21 will offer a space for all to heal. Parents can
bring their students. Staff and district leaders are also invited. Students will have the option to attend their own breakout session to process concerns and later meet local artists, Ashanti &
Kyle. These local artists will share information about upcoming workshops that incorporate art and/or music therapy. Also, please see Ashanti’s upcoming poetry workshop.

There are also some good resources I would like to share on the power of empathy, items from Learning for Justice, and support from the United Way.

We are here to help support and care for our students, staff, families and community.  Please let us know what you need, what you are struggling with, and how we can help to support you during these times.
